Art

I’m diving deeper into my love of portraits, and currently try to complete a new oil painting portrait every two weeks. There is something very satisfying about capturing an individual’s likeness on canvas. When I see that spark of “you” on my canvas, it feels like magic. Click below to see some of my artwork. If you are interested in purchasing a portrait, let me know. I may be more affordable than you think. (E-mail laurie@raretype.net or call 214-728.8878.)

Current Obsession: Socrates

I’m a follower of Stoic philosophy, and I love all of the classic Greek and Roman philosophers in this tradition. I’m working on a series of blogs about Plato’s dialogues, which chronicle Socrates’s last days before he was put to death.

“You will hear many people saying, ‘When I am 50, I shall retire into leisure. When I am 60, I shall give up public duties.’ And what guarantee do you have of a longer life? Who will allow your course to proceed as you arrange it? Aren’t you ashamed to keep for yourself just the remnants of your life, and to devote to wisdom only that time which cannot be spent on business? How late it is is to begin to live, really, just when life must end. How stupid to forget our mortality and put off sensible plans to our 50th and 60th years, aiming to begin life at a point at which few have arrived.”

—Seneca, 4 B.C. - 65 A.D.
